My niece and I were at the desk working away the other day, me on web projects and her playing games on my tablet. By the time I noticed what time it was, I realized we had been seated for hours! So we got up and stretched, took about a 15 minute break, and then was back at it – for how long? You guessed it – hours again! *booties numb*
My strategy is [usually] to work 45-50 minutes at at time and then take a 15 minute break to get up from the desk but it doesn’t always work that way, especially when I’m into a task and working it hard – I don’t want to stop the momentum!
I remembered reading an article about working from a standing desk and of course the fitness tip of sitting on a balance/exercise ball to break away from constant chair sitting at a desk. So I started doing some research on standing desks and found this infographic which, although makes a lot of sense, still seems alarming. Wow!
This infographic describing how sitting is killing us, along with an article I found entitled Why and How I Switched to a Standing Desk, are tempting me to try the standing desk concept!

Over to you…
Are you seated most of the day? How often do you take breaks? Weigh in!

You are so right on. SM in turn can do the same because that’s why we are on the computer so much. It does make the muscles weak. Good ideas!
Speaking of weak muscles, because I type almost all day every day, during breaks I stretch my wrists too. I also get massages often (my massage therapist makes sure to get out the “office worker” kinks too!) and I think that helps me as well.
Thanks for sharing Janet!

Great post. Yes, sitting is surprisingly dangerous! And not only sitting at the computer but also sitting and watching TV.

Hey Armi, that is why (unless it’s one of my favorite shows that requires full attention), I’m usually found simultaneously doing something during TV time because you’re right it’s the same thing – whether we’re working or watching TV.

This is a POWERFUL post. I knew too much sitting encourages sedentary habits and lifestyles, but didn’t consider all other physiological problems you cited. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Kesha,
This is an awesome infographic. We always knew sitting for long continuous hours was bad, but the real truth is that it can be so dangerous to our lives. I’m going for a small walk around as soon as I press the Submit Comment button.

Hey Sarah! Getting up, taking breaks, and walking for a bit is the next best thing so keep it up! I gotta really get back to doing that myself on a more consistent basis.
Thanks for sharing and I hope your walk was a relaxing one

This is wonderful information! I have a friend who recently changed her work station at her office so that she’s standing about 75% of her work day. She said it’s made a huge difference in how her body feels and how alert her mind is. I use a therapy ball at my desk at home on alternating days and I like how aware it keeps me – aware of my body, my balance. Great post!

I like your tactic of using the therapy ball on alternating days. I may incorporate that – it sounds way easier than standing! Thanks so much for your tip Dawn!
