Wazzupper Uncommon Crew!
Today, I am happy to share with you a lovely lady from one of my online tribes, Pushing Lovely – a collaborative website of compelling stories and thoughtful lessons from women in all walks of life.
One of the reasons she’s featured here today is because when asked the question, “How are you different? What do you do in your work that makes you stand out from the crowd?” she answered:
I am a curvy Catholic Latina woman who is and has had no choice but to accept myself, freckles and all. I had to learn early on how to be OK with my body. So whenever someone says they don’t take pictures, regardless of the type, I know ridicule and know how to combat it because I’ve been there. I know how to help you accept your body no matter what your shape.
See what I mean? She IS an Uncommon Chick which makes her an even fabulous-er photographer.
So with that I present to you…5 minutes with Wanda Thomas. Enjoy!
1. We are often multi-passionate beings. What’s your passion these days?
These days between school and shooting for Main Line Today Magazine, I am working on putting together the First Ever Philadelphia Photography Awards Show!
2. What does “being uncommon” mean to you and how do you embody that ideal daily?
To me Un-Common means going against the grain, enjoying who I am, realizing that the choices that I made in the past were not so much mistakes but stepping stones to the person that I am today.
3. In your work as a photographer, you often encounter people with body image issues. How do you help them overcome that?
I tell people, especially women, that we are givers of life. The body that we have is usually the result of childbirth and we need to embrace it because our body was housed to carry a human being. A PERSON was living inside of us. Putting religion aside, at some point you have to see how awesome that feat is. You pushed a human out of you. Please be a little forgiving on your skin.
4. What lights you up about your work?
I Love the shots that are unposed, when people are just being themselves. Those few moments when they forget about my camera and just relax. You can see it in their eyes, pure laughter and joy.
5. What was one of the big challenges you’ve faced in your life or work and what did you learn from it?
One of my biggest challenges was letting go of control. As the oldest in a Puerto Rican family, a lot was expected of me. So naturally doing everything in my business was just a given. I learned really fast that I wanted to spend more time with my children and hubby which meant letting go of some of the non-photography related tasks.
6. What piece of wisdom/advice did someone give you that has worked really well for your journey through this thing called life?
Don’t lose your voice. In this life we are so consumed with so much stuff we constantly compare ourselves to everyone else that we forget who WE truly are. It’s a dangerous slope. When trying to be like everyone else, you can lose your own voice and even forget who you are.
7. When you were younger, what did you want to be, do or have when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher since first grade. My teacher, Ms. Fitzpatrick, played the guitar for us every Friday if the class was good. She was my first out of the home role model.
8. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
Oh wow! When I was younger I wanted to be Linda Carter-Wonder Woman. I loved her Magic Lasso & Healing Factors!
9. An interesting fact about you is…
I am stubborn beyond belief.
10. Where can we stalk you?
My name is Wanda Thomas and I’m a professional photographer in the Philadelphia and New Jersey region at MadCris Images, a combination of my children’s names, Madeline and Cristian. Photography excites me – Headshots, Events, Weddings, along with my love for empowering women through my Be Beautiful Sessions. You have no idea how sexy a woman is till you see her discover how free she can be in her own skin. Capturing these moments is what I LIVE for. It truly brings me joy to help others see themselves the way the world sees them…beautiful and full of life.
Over to you…
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Wanda. Please connect with her further online!
