And we’re back with another edition of the REAL Uncommon Chicks! In this episode, I introduce you to the fabulous Ms. Dani, creator of She Dares!, the place where like-minded women connect to share unforgettable experiences. Doesn’t that sound awesome?!
So without further ado, here’s 5 Minutes with Danielle Fontus. Enjoy!
1. Tell us all about Danielle!
Danielle, known to many as Dani Dares, is a native New Yorker – born and raised in Queens yet currently obsessed with her Harlem neighborhood. She spent her college days in Atlanta at Emory University and prevailed with a double degree in Psychology and English. Seeing herself as a modern day mix of Miss Frizzle and Carmen Sandiego, Dani can often be found traveling, eating, dancing, pretty much indulging in any adventure that tickles her fancy. When home in NYC, she is probably exercising her superpowers in the world of hospitality, getting her girls together for Harlem nights or planning her next adventure.
Danielle is the creator of the She Dares community, where women dare to take their social lives to the next level through adventures and experiences that not only push them out of their comfort zones but also allow them to form genuine, long lasting relationships with other like minded women. Danielle is an adventure planner, master connector, event host, writer, leader of interactive workshops and adding lifestyle influencer to her portfolio.
2. What lights you up about your work?
First and foremost, it’s fun! I like to think of myself as a “Funbassador” (as my friend likes to say). It fills my heart with pure joy to share an experience with someone that not only brings them pleasure but also enhances their life in some way. I absolutely enjoy the power of connection and community; and sprinkled with the magic of serendipity that comes from adventure, this work is truly satisfying.
3. You’re officially an uncommon chick now. What does being an uncommon chick mean to you?
Yes! This is perfect because I’ve unofficially been an “uncommon chick” for most of my life. Always being the youngest in my class and among my friends, I did everything later than everyone else – my first bra, my sweet 16, my driver’s license, my 21st birthday – which at the time felt like such a disadvantage. In school, I was a nerdy lefty who enjoyed tests and homework, and from high school on I was one of few African American students. We all know how isolating the experience of being different can be when you’re young. As I got older and learned to embrace it, it became fun. It became my personal adventure to bring something new and unique into a room or a group. Even among my closest friends, I often feel like a unicorn who thinks of things differently than most people in the group. But now I am more comfortable and share it unapologetically and they have accepted me as such. I’ve realized that it’s fun in my world. Life is a party and adventure in my head, and I’m excited to welcome others into my world. That’s the storyline of my future content. It’s fun here, and I bet you’ll have fun here too.
4. It’s a good day when…
I’m having fun! Bonus if I’m pushing myself in some way.
5. How do you relax and shut out the noise (self-care)?
A true only child, I thoroughly enjoy and cherish my alone time. Sometimes than can look like journaling with my Jill Scott Pandora station, an aerial yoga class, a walk in the neighborhood, a solo lunch date, a long, aimless drive, lounging on a rooftop or sitting and looking out into the water – whatever allows my mind to chill and wander.
6. What quote or mantra do you live by?

7. What is the one thing you most want to be known for?
Genuine epicness! I want to make people happy and blow their minds.
8. What has been one of your most memorable experiences?
A girls trip to Abaco, Bahamas in 2010. There were dolphins and rainbows, dancing in the rain, private beaches, fresh caught conch salads, finger licking lunches, endless rum punches, friendly strangers, and hosts who delivered anything our hearts desired. It was the ultimate experience of hospitality. As one who is often giving the experience, it is so truly appreciated to receive such genuine gestures. My heart was so overwhelmed with love that I cried real thug tears on our last day.
9. What do you want/hope people to take away from all that you do?
That life is fun – even with all the “hard” STUFF! And that we really do have the power to CHOOSE to create a life we truly LOVE.
