How I Saved a Life With a Smile

did you smile today? baby scowling

You’ve probably heard that it takes “X” muscles to frown but “X minus Y” muscles to smile right? Well, through the years, there have been many guesses (link to Snopes.com) as to how many it actually takes but the general consensus is smiling requires less AND it’s much better for you anyway.

Exercise: 1) Smile…………… 2) Now frown………… Doesn’t frowning SEEM like it takes so much more effort? :-)

So, smile! I guess that’s why those who are always smiling look younger – like me ;-)

How I Saved a Life With a Smile

I know how much of a difference a little smile can make and I know how good it feels when a complete stranger smiles back in gratitude. It usually leaves me grinning for a long while after – and then my grins get bigger and turn into cheeses and then I literally sometimes just burst out in full blown laughter LOL.

So I like to tell this brief story which still gets me teary eyed to this day. One day I was walking down the street minding my own business when a woman came into view, walking towards me. I thought nothing of her really as I’m sure my mind was on something else but, still, I simply smiled at her like I normally do when in passing.

Next thing I knew, she stopped me and said “Thank You. I needed that.” She looked like she had been crying or deeply on edge about something. I responded, “You’re welcome and have a great day!

Now, I have no idea what this woman was going through and it’s not my business. Nevertheless, I give the Universe thanks all the time for being the giver of a simple smile that day as I’ll never know how that smile really changed her world. (teary eyed – told ya! LOL)

So though I don’t literally know if I “saved” a life, I like to believe that I saved that woman from a few more moments of agony, pain, and sadness if I hadn’t walked by and that’s real! :-)

Some of My Favorite Quotes About Smiles

Life is like a mirror, we get the best results when we smile at it. ~Author Unknown

Smiling is infectious,
You can catch it like the flu.
Someone smiled at me today,
And I started smiling too.

Take the Pledge!

No matter how upset you are, remember that it could be worse. So smile at someone else today! Make their day just a bit more friendly and maybe they’ll pass it on. Who knows what kind of a chain you could start just by moving a couple of facial muscles!!

Have you smiled at someone today (even if it’s at yourself!)? You never know whose life you might impact positively just by smiling!

Just tried to frown, and it was rather difficult. LOL

    • http://uncommonchick.com Kesha

Aha! Marie, you feel me. It seems to take so much more effort! At least I know I’ll catch you smiling more often than not :-)

Well, now I can see why the universe nudged me toward this post tonight, Kesha. And the universe rarely steers me wrong. ;)

I just wormed my way out of the most miserable, congested, bumper-to-bumper Friday night traffic struggling to make it home after a long day on the job.

Believe me, there was a whole lot of frowning going on on the highway!

No wonder my facial muscles are so sore.

But now that I’ve read your post …

I’m wearing a smile (and my cheeks don’t hurt anymore). :)

    • http://uncommonchick.com Kesha

Yes, the Universe knows EXACTLY what it’s doing Mel ;-)

I’m not a fan of traffic either (you should see some of the things I do to try to avoid a lot of idiots, oops I mean people, on the roads!)

When it’s unavoidable, here’s one thing I do (since I can be impatient) – I look in the rearview mirror and make faces at myself and you know that will automatically get me smiling and laughing LOL (yeah, I’m silly like that!)

Or find a way to amuse yourself. Or when you catch yourself frowning, hurry up and smile and see how long you can hold it. Trust me, that’s a good laugh waiting to happen too!

The trick to all this is you gotta be kinda silly and since we’re sisters and lovingly connected, I’m sure you’re right up there on the silliness meter with me ;-)

      • http://melaniekissell.com/blog Melanie Kissell

I’m definitely dancing the polka with ya right up there on the silliness meter. LOL!!

Great tips for dealing with the worst traffic in the U.S.– Thanks. ;)

        Have an amazing weekend!

Exactly Nik and since we never know how our words will affect others, we may as well make them positive right?! :-)

I’m so glad she told you thank you for smiling at her Kesha. Obviously a kind gesture was exactly what she needed.

I’m sure you already know what I’m about to share. Oh yes, I’m one smiling fool girl. Not only do I smile at people but I’ll tell them “well hey there, how are you today?” Yep, the majority of them can’t help but come back with something and it’s obvious that so many people just need more of that in their lives.

A smile can go a very long way. So, let’s go save the world shall we?

    • http://uncommonchick.com Kesha

I’m all for saving the world any way I can Adrienne! As I got older I started to learn how the “little” things such a smile or a kind word went a long way with people. I think people like you and I thrive on that too which is why we offer kind gestures to others all the time :-)

Misery loves company and I run from people that don’t smile. I choose to be happy and smiling is something draws people to you. Adrienne Smith is one of those people and so many other bloggers I have met online. Not everyone has that trait, but it’s something we all should strive for. Smiling brings joy to others and it ultimately enriches your life in the process.

    Great post!

    • http://uncommonchick.com Kesha

I, too, love Adrienne and other bloggers I’ve met online who are just the most awesome people around, including yourself ;-)

I’m so happy to have met you and others virtually and let’s keep those smiles going :-)

Loved this, thank you! Passing smiles virtually is the next best thing to in person smiles. :-))

Yes, Terri, I’ll pass along a virtual smile any day in lieu of a physical one when it’s not possible…as a matter of fact, here are some hugs, smooches, and smiles for you!

      Thanks for commenting!

I’m 15 and I really can’t smile to save my life. I don’t show my teeth because my smile just looks worse mainly because I have a small mouth and my gums are quite high so all you see is teeth basically but they’re average size lol.

I smiled on reading this post. Everyone smiles in the same language, wow that’s an awesome quote.

That is such a powerful quote Catherine and I think it speaks volumes.
