dance like everyone is watching

You know that quote that talks about dancing like nobody’s watching? Yeah, you know which one I’m talking about…this one:

“Work like you don’t need the money,
Love like you’ve never been hurt,
Dance like nobody’s watching,
Sing like nobody’s listening,
Live like it’s heaven on earth.”

When I first heard it, I was all like, “That’s cool…I’ll embody that!

I understood the message, line by line, and it made perfect sense to me. I even posted it up on my wall at work, at home, doodled it in my journal…it became one of my life’s mantras or philosophy if you will.

But then I was forced urged (twice!) to do the Dance of Liberation at a retreat recently. Say whaaaaa? Nope, I didn’t know what it was either at first but it was while doing the Dance of Liberation that line 3 of the quote above changed for me…

The Dance of Liberation

First, what’s the Dance of Liberation? “The Dance of Liberation® is a unique form of movement therapy that heals and frees physical, mental, emotional and spiritual blockages. Utilizing dance, contemporary shamanism, hands on healing, drumming and global music, this powerful and beautiful soul work sheds inhibitions and heightens inner awareness in a safe and carefully monitored group setting.

Yep, the ish just got REAL!

A Dance Epiphany

So one night of the retreat, Parashakti, our lovely leader, led us in the Dance of Liberation, where we were blindfolded in a darkened yurt and directed to dance our word (from earlier that day). My word was breakthrough and I found myself doing movements that portrayed breaking free from something.

parashakti and keshaAs soon as I thought we were done with the Dance of Liberation, as interesting as it was, she directed us to do it again the next day – this time while others are watching! “Noooooo!” I thought. “I don’t want anybody watching me dance my breakthrough!

I was extremely nervous to have other people watching my every move. I thought I’d feel violated. LOL

However, she said one statement that turned the whole experience around for me. She asked, “How can you perform in the world (whatever that looks like for you) if you can’t even perform for 7 people???

PROFOUND! It clicked for me right then and there. If I couldn’t share my most vulnerable self with these few people, how could I ever expect to show up and show out in my community, in my online world, and in everything else I do!!!?!

It then became an absolutely freakin’ amazing experience!

Dance Like Everyone is Watching

Remember in the movie Hitch when Albert was showing Hitch his killer dance moves? Here’s a quick video clip to remind you just in case…

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50YQeugOMOw

Once Albert is done rockin’ out his moves, Hitch tells him to cool it as he thinks he’s going to embarrass himself.

How many Hitch’s – dream killers – do you know?

Hitch tries to get him to be who he isn’t, dance like everyone else, conform and be cool to get along. In the end, Albert does his moves anyway and his date, Allegra, loves him for it! (though if she hadn’t, I still applaud Albert for opening up and being himself)…

How many times have you “danced” in private, hiding your true self from those around you?

I can speak from personal experience…hiding is easy, but it’s also a cop out, a way to let ourselves off the hook.

I know that if I truly want to excel and achieve my goals, I have to:

  • APPRECIATE where I am right now
  • show UP and show OUT
  • surround myself with LIKE MINDED peeps
  • know what I want and TAKE ACTION
  • go BIG or go home!

So dance like EVERYONE is watching – with intensity and passion, desire and happiness, love and gratitude.

When you do, you pay attention to your actions, make big moves, make a difference, do it bigger and better, and do it all courageously.

How Will You Dance?

Will you dance like I do at home in the mirror or when I’m playing Midnight Karaoke, fist balled up as my microphone and music blasting? Build your business, raise your kids, stand up for yourself, and DANCE like everyone is watching! DO YOU BOO!

What do you think my friends? Will you “dance” like everyone is watching? Give me your feedback in the comments below!

Dance Like EVERYONE is Watching…The Dance of Liberation
  • Eva

Love it! Love it! I don’t think I could do it – but she was right – if we can’t dance for less than a dozen folks, how will we dance for the world? I’ve found a few new people that I can be myself around, apart from my familiar friends of 20+ years, and it really is fantastic. Dancing for those few folks, has definitely helped me open up and show more of my personality without shame. Sharing… 🙂

    • Heeeey Eva! Grateful that you’ve stopped over and shared your feedback. I am so happy that you’ve found new people to truly and genuinely connect with. Those are the keepers we all need to have around and everybody wins when our true selves show up. 😉

  • Love this story. Thanks for sharing something so personal. I love your personal drive to blast through your obstacles to breakthrough what’s holding u back. So inspiring!

    • Thanks Steve; it’s my new personal mission to do just that – BLAST through! 🙂

  • Val

I read this and was like WOW.. If you can’t do it in front of 7… Very profound. Just be who you are.. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

    • Exactly, Val! That was my awakening moment right there! Amazing how one statement can change our perspective and our lives in an instant! 🙂

  • AWESOME!! Excellent article!

  • Well said, Kesha. The need to be our authentic selves is shut down on so many levels, beginning within ourselves. As we get the urge (and the nerve) to dance for self, then a few, then a few more, we become who God meant us to be… our true selves and not what others would have us be. Thanks for the inspiration, and the information!

  • Indeed the self consciousness gets in most people’s way and its the very thing that draws us to artists and other humans. Yes, I love this reminder

  • My liberation dance is the running man! lol I feel so free, and it relieves stress! I don’t have much rhythm but will dance in public! Glad you are expressing yourself through movement!

    • Funny you mentioned the running man, Heather. I was at an old skool party last weekend so you know we busted out that dance among others! LOL 🙂

Thanks for stopping through chica and talk to ya soon!

  • HI Kesha,

Confidence buddy confidence. It generates confidence and keep us in sync so we don’t go out of way. Perfect way to enhance living..

    Bravo

  • Well I love dancing, and I’ve often said it’s the way I “talk” so I’m 100% in support of this.

  • Wow. This was unexpectedly inspiring! Thanks for the lift, Lakesha!

    • Heeeeey Mark! Lovely to have you up in the place. 🙂

I’m glad you got a bit of a lift today and that I could be that conduit! I agree that I was unexpectedly surprised at how the experience changed me as well. 😉

      Catch ya lata bruh!
