In today’s economy, it’s a must to save as much money as possible. Why? A few main reasons I can think of are:
- To stay sane knowing I have some sort of an emergency fund,
- Saving money is definitely one way to make money,
- To do things I want to do (with the money I’ve saved by following a few simple strategies).
Don’t Buy Stuff You Can’t Afford
First I thought it imperative to just put it out there – the mother of all saving tactics or financial rules is this:
DON’T BUY STUFF YOU CAN’T AFFORD!
To help put this message into perspective, here’s an old skit from Saturday Night Live (SNL) with Steve Martin that is truly hilarious but one we all should take heed to.

I love your main point, Kesha…”Don’t buy stuff you can’t afford”! This is so fundamental. It’s amazing to me how many people think that because they can afford the *payment* that they can afford the item itself. This was a dangerous lesson I learned in the form of a $130K house mortgage. Fortunately, I was able to unload that thing right before the housing market crashed. All that to say, “people, pay attention to Kesha! Don’t buy stuff (especially a house) you can’t afford!”
In my household when I was little that was the main thing mainly because we couldn’t afford a lot of what we wanted anyway LOL
But I still think about that to this day! My coworkers and I were talking about that very same scenario yesterday and how people will walk into a dealership and ask what they have for $400 a month. Really? You don’t care how much that costs you in the end with interest and sale price? I guess some people either don’t care or just don’t know…
That’s how I was when I bought my first new car but I was young and unschooled so I’ll take that now as a learning experience

Thanks for the little tips. I have to agree, but at this point I’m not in control of our funds, but boy do I wish I was.
That means you have to get the person who is in control to read this and do better!
I know, I know – easier said than done right?

Hey Kesha,
What do you think all these people are waiting on after Christmas………….Tax Time…so they can go blow it on a new car or maybe just buy some more junk they couldn’t during 2012. It never hurts though to keep on telling them to save instead of spend!
We’re on a mission Miss Kathy! Let’s get out there and help people realize exactly what you just said – that they don’t need to buy more junk and instead save it it for what they actually truly need!
