Uncommon Chick and 2014 Kia Forte #DriveKia

A special thank you to my friends at Drive STI for providing me with a 2014 Kia Forte to use while I was getting my business hustle on in Miami!

This one time back in ~2002…at a dance…this happened…

Announcer: “Lakesha Brown. Lakesha Brown, you are the winner of the grand prize. Please come to the stage.

High school classmate standing next to me: “Girl, I think they just called your name. I think you won!

Me: “Won what?” I paused and listened more attentively.

Announcer: “Last chance, Lakesha Brown, if you are here, come to the stage to claim your prize.

So it WAS my name they called. Are you freakin’ kidding me? I won the grand prize?!! I can’t believe it!” I thought as I started walking towards the stage.

But being the cool chick I am, I calmly strutted through the crowd while politely expressing “excuse mes” and “coming throughs” to the anxious audience members who sooooo wished I had already left which would give them another chance to win.

After verifying I had the winning raffle ticket, the announcer said, “You can either choose the Kia car…” [aside: I don’t remember what model it was at the time] “…or $10,000 cash.”

A Kia car? Oh, you mean those blah, unstylish, itty bitty cars? Ummm, no hesitation needed.

Bump the car; I’ll take the $10,000 in cash please!!” I exclaimed.

You see, the only thing I had ever heard about Kia up until that time was that those cars were not very quality cars and definitely did not compete in style. No wonder they were giving one away! After taking my cash winnings, I didn’t think anything else about Kia.

Kia Has Come A Looooooong Way!

Fast forward to 2013 when Kia completely blew my mind!

When I was in Atlanta at the Blogalicious Conference, both of my roommates were driving Kia cars. One had a Sorento while the other had a Cadenza. Boy oh boy did they impress! Surprisingly stylish, extremely functional, and very roomy, we were styling and profiling around the city of Atlanta!

As Kia’s slogan is the “The Power to Surprise – the power to influence people’s overall driving lives by questioning common design, option, and technology through new and unique vision,” they surprised the heck outta me fa sho!

Fast forward again about a month later when I get my hands on a 2014 Kia Forte for a couple days while attending HUSTLE in Miami and I have to say, this little car has style for miles. 🙂

I will say, though, that since I’m a tall girl who usually wears big hair, ponytails, and mohawks, it was vertically challenging getting in and out of the car. I had to do dip-and-twist neck dances so I wouldn’t mess my hair up. In addition, I had to adjust my seat as far back as it would go which practically meant it was a 3 seater instead of 4. LOL

On the other hand, my favorite feature about all three Kia cars I’ve ridden in is the booming sound system. It is soooo crystal clear with great bass – which I love – that it made me want to cheat on my Chevy Traverse when I got home because it didn’t compare. The grass IS greener sometimes. Shhh, don’t tell my vehicle that. 😉

Even though the engine is a 4-cylinder, I had no problem getting in where I fit in on the bustling streets of South Beach. And speaking of getting around, the navigation system (part of the UVO eServices Infotainment System) was helpful although I had to pull over to enter exact addresses which took a bit of time. I’ve found that car navigation systems, not just Kia’s, are nothing compared to Google Maps where all I have to tell it are very simple, and sometimes vague, info with almost instantaneous and accurate results.

Kia Aims To Fit Lifestyle Needs

I’m loving that Kia has come a long way from the negative perception I had of the company way back when to what it offers today by way of stylish vehicles, advanced technologies, entertainment options, and standard features people are looking for these days. Kia may very well be one of my top choices when I’m in the market for a new car!

Ha! I knew you would take it back. A Kia was intended for just transportation. Now they have definitely stepped up the game in design, technology, ergonomics you name it. We rented one for vacation and absolutely loved the gas mileage. It was so roomy for all five of us and it was the sedan, not the SUV. The Sorento is very sporty and a great value. Yes, Kia has come a long way..

  • Kia’s really have come a long way. I remember seeing a few back in the day and thy were very boxy. Even their commercials are super eye catching now. I recently just bought a car but if I were shopping for one, Kia would be on my list of cars to check out.

I love driving Kia. It’s also affordable.

Hi Kesha, it is really difficult to find a car which matches your lifestyle. Well, if you want a vehicle to commute or travel, you have a huge range to choose from but talking of making a style statement, you need to do some leg work. I am really glad that you find one for yourself. Good luck ahead!
